Top 10 Wine No-No’s

By Felicia Sherbert, author of The Unofficial Guide to Selecting Wine

  1. 1.Don’t put ice cubes in Château Very Expensive – white or red.

  1. 2.Don’t order the cheapest wine on the wine list. (It usually has the highest mark-up.)

  1. 3.Don’t assume that a wine merchant’s “sale” bin represents his best values.

  1. 4.Don’t limit yourself to “red wine with meat, white wine with fish.” This wine “rule” went out of style with Continental cuisine.

  1. 5.Don’t blindly select wine by the numbers (wine ratings by the “experts.”)

  1. 6.Don’t sniff the cork when the server opens your wine and presents it to you at the table.

  1. 7.Don’t limit yourself to wines from any one wine growing country or region. Good wines are being made all over the world today and many represent excellent values if you know where to look.)

  1. 8.Don’t put a bottle of Champagne in the freezer to chill it quickly if you forgot to refrigerate it.

  1. 9.Don’t “shop” for wine over the weekend.

10. Don’t save that “special bottle” that you received for your birthday, anniversary or housewarming. Create an occasion, pull the cork, and savor it.

Real Wine Lovers Say...

“If you occasionally drink wine and wonder why it is that some experiences are so much better than others, then this book is for you. In it the author strips away the pretentious mystery that surrounds wine drinking and encourages the reader to discover their own tastes and preferences. In a nice progression the book lets you learn as much or as little as you like. The basic premise is that the real point to drinking wine is to enjoy it. The secret to making this enjoyment consistent isn't in trying to learn obscure vintages or labels, but in understanding why you like what you like and encouraging you to follow your own tastes. Good advice for wine and and so much else.”

--P. Tackowiack (Basking Ridge, NJ)

“Very good reference guide to wines that answers questions you never thought to ask. Valuable information on various levels of quality that will help to prevent paying too much for a lower grade wine, e.g. beaujolais.” --D. Clements (La Cruces, NM)
